Music Microcomputer Lab (Walters 250) Student Use Policy
General
Printing
- Abuse of lab facilities or disregard of proctor instructions could jeopardize lab privileges.
- No Food or Drink are allowed in the room at any time
- You must be out of the lab before closing time (stop working 10 minutes before closing time).
- Please help us keep the lab clean. Be careful with the equipment. Do not place anything on top of the keyboards.
- The Music Microcomputer Lab is open only for music majors and music minors enrolled in technology courses. People enrolled in Music Technology courses working on class-related projects have priority use of the computer stations.
- Be courteous of other lab users. In particular:
In short, behave as you would in a library.
- Please keep conversations at an acceptable level
- Do not display harassing or offensive materials
- Do not play any music or sound out loud. Use headphones at all times
- Computer-specific rules:
- All lab users must log onto a computer.
- Users may not install any software on any machine
- Do not trash (i.e., discard) anything on the computers.
- Save often and back up your work on multiple floppies. Disks fail. Even hard disks fail.
- If you save your work to the hard drive, you must put it in your folder (the folder with your name). Anything left in this folder is left at your own risk. Folders will be emptied at the end of the semester, or sooner if space is needed on the server.
- Software piracy is illegal. Anyone engaging in illegal copying of software or conspiring to engage in illegal copying of software will be reported and may receive a failing grade. I'm not kidding.
- Removing anything from this lab without prior permission of (even temporarily) is considered theft. Any student caught removing anything from the lab will be reported to the proper authorities.
- Never plug or unplug any cables in the lab without permission from the music technology instructors.
- A student Lab Assistant will be on duty in the lab at all times during open lab hours. Only people approved and scheduled by are allowed to be Lab Assistants. If the appointed Lab Assistant does not show up for their lab time, the lab must be closed. Assistants will try to be as helpful as possible, but they may not have an answer for your question.
- There are manuals for some of the programs and equipment located in the lab. To use any of these manuals during lab time, check them out with the student lab assistant or with any of the music technology instructors. You will be required to give your student ID card in exchange for the manuals. At no time are the manuals to leave the room.
- Please report all problems with the lab by email to the lab administrator,
- You are only allowed to print school-related coursework.
- Make sure to put your name on all documents before you print them. Many people will be working on the same or similar assignments as yours. If two people in the same class print out homework without a name, it is next to impossible to determine which one belongs to whom. As the first step, put your name on every document you generate -- this will prevent this problem in the first place.
- The printer is not a copier. Do not print multiple copies.
- Carefully proofread your work on-screen. Do not use the printer to proofread "rough drafts".
- If you print a document and it does not come out of the printer, do not simply try to print it again. There is some problem that must be fixed before it will work and since the computer remembers each print command, when the problem is fixed, multiple copies of your document will be printed. If you are having a printing problem:
- Look at the green light on the printer. If it is flashing, the printer is currently "thinking" about printing. Depending on the complexity of your document (or someone else's document), it may take several minutes for the page to print.
- Go to the application menu (upper right corner) and look to see if the icon there is flashing. If so, the "Finder" (MacOS) is waiting to give you a message. Choose the finder and carefully read the dialog box that appears.
- If none of these steps resolves the problem, report the problem via e-mail to the lab administrator, and try printing your document from another station.
